Learning About Computer Performance Management

Group study

Performance management isn't really a main subject in computer science departments. There might be a class on computer performance, but its often a class on queuing theory.

For programmers, a class on algorithms may be the only place that performance is even mentioned.

Both of these areas, queuing theory and algorithms, are important. But much more is required.

Great Resources

Luckily, there are many resources that can help you become a performance expert. We hope you find the ones here useful. Let us know of any others, and we'll be happy to add them.

Resources for Performance Management

There are many sources of good information on computer performance. Books, of course, are a great resource. Unfortunately, some of the classics are out of print. But there are still many good ones.

The internet, of course, is another great source of information. There are educational sites, vendor sites, and even sites for open source software for performance management.

There are also a number of organizations that provide research and training in computer performance. They all have web sites as well. We direct you to three of the major ones here.

Organizations

We provide links to three of the major organizations that deal with computer performance: the Association for Computing Machinery, The Institute for Electronic and Electrical Engineers, and the Computer Measurement Group.

InternetTools and Technologies

The web is full of useful information on computer performance. We provide links to sites that provide articles and education materials. We also provide links to great open source tools you can use. Since we are developers, we also provide a for developers only section with links to our favorite development tools and technologies..
